PRIMGHAR, Iowa – Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach will host a “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” course at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina every Thursday evening from 4:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. beginning Oct. 4 through Nov. 8. The program is open to the public and registrations are now being accepted.

Over 43.5 million family caregivers in America provide a vast array of emotional, financial, nursing, social, homemaking and other services to older adults or adults with chronic conditions. “Powerful Tools for Caregivers” is an educational series designed to provide caregivers – family members, hospital staff, nursing home staff, volunteers and anyone else – with the tools they need to take care of themselves.

“If caregivers take good care of themselves, they are better equipped to take good care of the person or people they are caring for,” said Lori Hayungs, human sciences specialist in family life with ISU Extension and Outreach. “By supporting and providing this program, the O’Brien County Extension Council is striving to provide caregivers with resources and knowledge to empower them personally and help them be successful professionally. It is hoped that employers and family members will encourage caregivers to participate in the course.”

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” participants will learn how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate their feelings, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources. It is open to family caregivers, as well as those who work in caregiving professionally.

Classes consist of six 90-minute sessions held once a week. Two trained, experienced facilitators will lead the class in interactive lessons, discussions and the sharing of helpful tools and resources. The First Presbyterian Church will also provide refreshments each evening.

There is a $15 registration fee to help cover the cost of materials and training. Scholarships are available for those in need of financial assistance. Contact the ISU Extension and Outreach O’Brien County office at 712-957-5045 or email xobrien@iastate.edu for more information about scholarships.
